Your 11-Point Summer Pest Control Checklist

Summer is here! That means more time outdoors, kids running in and out of doors, and travel bags sitting on your floors.

Here's a summer pest control checklist to help you keep your home free from unwanted pests during the summer months:

  1. Inspect and seal entry points: Check all doors, windows, and foundation for any cracks or gaps that could serve as entry points for pests. Seal them properly using caulk or weatherstripping.

  2. Trim vegetation: Trim back trees, shrubs, and bushes that are touching or close to your home. This will help prevent pests from using them as bridges to access your house.

  3. Clean the yard: Remove any debris, such as piles of leaves, woodpiles, or overgrown vegetation, from your yard. These can attract pests like rodents and insects.

  4. Check and maintain screens: Inspect screens on windows and doors for tears or holes. Repair or replace damaged screens to keep mosquitoes, flies, and other insects out.

  5. Remove standing water: Regularly check your property for any sources of standing water, such as birdbaths, clogged gutters, or stagnant pools. Remove or drain the water to prevent mosquito breeding.

  6. Secure outdoor trash bins: Ensure your outdoor trash bins have tight-fitting lids to prevent pests from accessing them. Clean the bins regularly to eliminate food residue and odors.

  7. Store food properly: Keep all food in airtight containers, both inside and outside your home. This includes pet food and bird feeders, as they can attract pests if left exposed.

  8. Maintain a clean kitchen: Clean up spills and crumbs promptly, and regularly empty and clean your garbage cans. Wipe down countertops, sweep the floors, and keep the kitchen area tidy to discourage pests like ants, roaches, and mice away.

  9. Inspect and clean the attic and basement: Check these areas for signs of pests, such as droppings, nests, or chewed wires. Remove any clutter and seal any openings to prevent pests from entering.

  10. Inspect your travel bags: Carefully, look over your luggage before you leave your hotel or AirBnB to make sure you’re not bringing bed bugs back to your home. If you suspect or are scared that you’ve brought home an unwanted pest, place your bags inside the garage, the laundry room, or on your patio. Vacuum your luggage inside and out, and wash all of your clothes.

  11. Schedule regular pest control treatments: Consider hiring a professional pest control service to conduct routine inspections and treatments. They can provide targeted solutions to prevent and eliminate pests specific to your area.

Remember, prevention is key to avoiding pest infestations. By following this checklist and staying proactive, you can enjoy a pest-free summer in your home. Contact the Atlanta Outsourced Pest Control at 678-948-6032 for custom pest control solutions for your home.
